Over the past 12 months the NSW SES has assisted the community 32,000 times, with 56 per cent of these incidents involving fallen branches and trees from storms and 41 per cent involving leaking roofs.
While the official storm season runs from October 1 to March 31, Marrickville SES deputy local commander Julie Powell said severe weather could happen at any time and communities should always be prepared.
She described the unit’s first Get Ready workshop, which was held in August for women, as “a huge success” and said the next free ‘Get Ready’ workshop will be held at their headquarters in Sydenham next Wednesday, October 23, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.
“It will be a mixed workshop and we encourage anyone who is interested to simply jump onto the NSW SES – Marrickville Unit Facebook page for more information and to register their attendance,” she said.
“These workshops are a great way for residents to learn some new skills, tips and tricks to help them protect their family, home and pets during storm and flood events.”
A participant in the first workshop, Jenny Lavery said it had absolutely been worth attending.
“The workshop was fabulous, interesting, informative and great fun,” she said.
“I would highly recommend these workshops.”
Get emergency ready
URGING everyone to learn how to prepare for the storm season, the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) Marrickville Unit’s second ‘Get Ready’ workshop is open for registrations.
