When the food drive began this month, Principal Omar Merheb says he couldn’t have imagined the outpouring of generosity from parents, teachers and students.
“Donations kept pouring in from families and last week, local supermarkets were generous enough to donate as well; the staff room is bursting at the seams and currently resembles a mini supermarket,” he said.
Teaming up with Lighthouse Community Support and Brothers In Need to support both the homeless and those in desperate situations due to the ongoing pandemic, Mr Merheb said the aim of the food drive was to teach children to help those less fortunate and hoped it would now become an annual college event.
“Having our students directly involved in helping the needy, will teach them from a young age to play an active role in the community,” he said.
Canterbury-Bankstown Deputy Mayor Bilal El-Hayek was left stunned by the generosity.
“It’s not only important to build academic citizens but also ones who portray leadership skills in playing an active role in the community,” he said.
Boost of food to help feed needy
OVERWHELMED by a flood of donations, a food drive at Al Hikma College, Lakemba, has been extended by a week.
