Junior rugby union victors

THE big wet failed to dampen the success of Oatley Rugby Club which has been declared winner of the inaugural Sydney Junior Rugby Union’s (SJRU) Club Championship.

Calculated by assessing the results of 62 junior teams across Sydney, the award went to Oatley for its consistent results and number of A grade teams.
The club enjoyed a number of other victories too including winning the u15s A grade grand final – the fourth year that team has finished first – as well as the u11s B Grade grand final, with the u18s and u14s girls being runners-up.
Club seniors were runners-up in the NSW Suburban Rugby Union’s Jeffrey Cup.
During the year, Oatley also had its greatest ever number of players selected in Southern Districts junior representative teams, with nine players progressing to Sydney or NSW selection.
It was great recognition for Oatley’s girl program to see recent graduate Loketi (Keti) Mahoni, who joined less than two years ago, selected for the Tongan womens team to play in the Pacific Nations Cup.
Other club firsts include hosting the Girl’s Winter Sevens finals and four of the SJRU u15s grand finals.
However, at the top of the list was hosting the u16s State Championships which was a real honour as it was the first time it had been held in Sydney south.
Club President Willy Trostel said this year’s success was due to the commitment of the committee, coaches, managers, players and parents.
“We look forward to further success in 2023.”
