Rugby Union’s hunt for young

SHOWCASING one of the world’s fastest growing sports, Canterbury Juniors Rugby Club is looking for families and friends with school-aged children to join their rugby community.

The only rugby club in the Canterbury Bankstown LGA, it provides rugby opportunities for all levels of players, from minis as young as five, junior boys and senior (adult) players, and has ventured into girls rugby in a big way, now boasting one of the fastest growing girls rugby programs in Sydney.
The junior club fields teams for girls and boys aged from five to 18 years and has the advantage of owning their own rugby ground with full facilities at Wills Ground, Lang Road in Earlwood.
Junior Club president and coach, Shannon Maddern-Daniels, says they are working hard to promote rugby union in the area and inviting new players to give it a go, with training kicking off last Wednesday (5.30-7pm) and the season getting underway this Friday night.
“We play in the Sydney Junior Rugby competition and have a great relationship with Sydney Uni, feeding our juniors into their development pathways program which leads to selection for the Wallabies and Walleroos,” she said.
Describing it as more technical than rugby league without the injury and concussion statistics, Maddern-Daniels says that if you want a more all-action, end-to-end spectacle, rugby union is probably your ‘rugby of choice’, with more exciting runs and passes and varied, kicking plays.
“It’s the ideal sport for girls and boys and registration is potentially free with the use of an Active Kids Voucher,” she said.
