Minister for Health, Ryan Park, said midwives played a critical role, supporting mothers, their partners, babies, and families, supporting the birth of almost 100,000 babies right across our State each year.
“This is a huge and vitally important undertaking, and I want to thank every midwife working across our health system for their commitment to providing safe, high quality, care,” he said.
Advocating for safe maternity care, alongside better pay and conditions, the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) General Secretary, Shaye Candish, said midwives worked selflessly around the clock to ensure newborns arrived safely and to support women during a significant life event.
“Our midwives really are incredible, they are constantly developing their skills and advancing their practices with evidence-based learnings to improve outcomes for those in their care,” Ms Candish said.
NSWNMA Auburn Hospital midwife, Enass Akkouch, agreed that increased support for midwives was desperately needed.
“Better shift by shift ratios will draw people to enter the profession as that’s such a big issue preventing people from entering healthcare,” she said.
Celebrate dedicated on day for midwives
