The program has been extended until June 30 with families offered a $100 voucher for each school-enrolled child, to increase participation of school-enrolled children in sport and physical activity, while helping ease pressure on family budgets.
“It is a particularly welcome initiative in our local area with many parents battling to make ends meet but this way, their child can get a chance to try a sport, and there is nothing I would be happier to recommend than cricket which teaches so many skills on and offer the field,” Mr Wood said.
“Parents should take advantage of it for sure and it would be even better if the Government increased the voucher amount because the difference it makes to families and their children is just so valuable.”
Granville & District Soccer Football Association (GDSFA) Operations Manager Rosanna Lentini agreed.
“There has never been a better time for children to get involved in sport,” she said.
“With the success of the Socceroos and the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup, there is a lot of excitement around football and this initiative is fantastic allowing parents to save a bit of money.”
A Parramatta Basketball Association spokesperson says it’s been a game-changer.
“The Active Kids Voucher Program has made such a difference to our sport,” she said.
“We used to have the situation where only one family member would be playing, usually the eldest boy, as the family couldn’t afford any more fees and the other kids would just come and watch but now we have whole families registering to play; it’s been really wonderful to see.”
