Clean Up Australia volunteers urged

PICKING up other people’s rubbish might not be the ideal way to spend a Sunday morning but hundreds of volunteers are set to roll up their sleeves for Clean Up Australia Day in early March.

Clean Up Australia chairperson, Pip Kiernan, says now is the time for all Australians to step in and clean up to help to protect and conserve their local environments, whether they are first-time volunteers or more seasoned clean up champions.
“It’s never been more important to get involved and make a real difference in your community,” she said.
“Today the focus of Clean Up Australia is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already accumulated and advocating for solutions towards a circular economy.”
Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake is also encouraging residents to get involved after a big increase in single-use plastics, alongside unprecedented numbers of discarded face masks, takeaway coffee cups and food packaging littering our footpaths, parks, and waterways, over the last two years.
“Clean Up Australia Day provides an opportunity for the community to learn about the things that harm our environment, change the way they think about their everyday habits, and take practical and positive action,” she said.
Clean up volunteers are needed at Duck River Parklands, Everley Park North, Auburn, on Sunday, March 5, 8-9.30am.
With Cumberland Council hosting both clean up opportunities, volunteers are also needed at Holroyd Gardens, corner Pitt and Walpole Streets, Merrylands, 9am-12.30pm.
