Eleanor wins gold at world championships

BANKSTOWN Sports Athletics Club’s Eleanor Patterson has produced one of the greatest performances in Australian athletics history by winning the Gold Medal in the Women’s High Jump at the World Athletics Championships held last week in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

Ranked world number five heading into the championships, Patterson, the reigning World Indoor Silver Medallist, commenced the competition with clearances of 1.81m, 1.87m, 1.93 and 1.96m to be in equal first position as the bar was raised to 1.98m.
After two failures at that height, she produced a third-time clearance to remain in medal contention in fourth place.
A brilliant personal best jump of 2m was matched by the Ukrainian and Italian athletes leaving her in the Bronze Medal position.
Eleanor then cleared 2.02m at her first attempt to catapult her into first place, a jump, which equalled the Australian and Oceania records. While the 2.02m was matched only by the Ukrainian, it was done so on the second attempt leaving Patterson alone at the top of the leader board.
Failures by both athletes at 2.04 meant that Australian athletics had a new World Champion.
Bankstown Sports Athletics Club president Col Whitbread and Athletics NSW Chair Matt Whitbread were in Eugene to witness Eleanor’s achievement.
“BSAC has a world champion,” Col said.
“Words can’t describe the feeling, it is absolutely stupendous and we are incredibly proud of Eleanor.”
