First Virtual Sydney Film Festival to inspire

Adam Bowes.

WHEN a young acting and film production trio, including Marrickville’s Nina Oyama, shot their movie, ‘Diving In’, in January, they were hoping it would be picked up for the Sydney Film Festival and had no idea that Covid-19 was about to strike.

Along with the doco ‘Descent’, with music by Hurlstone Park’s Kailesh Reitmans, ‘Diving In’ has now been selected for the 67th Sydney Film Festival: Virtual Edition and Awards, the first ever national and digital festival .
Nina and Adam Bowes had collaborated previously and joined Jessica Murphy to produce a web series before Screenability allowed them to create short film “Diving In’.
Featuring fantastic underwater photography, ‘Diving In’ is a romantic comedy which sees a group of friends play a prank on the main actor (Adam), forcing him to ask out his crush with some entertaining results.
As well as being an actor, writer and director, Adam, 26, is a world record holding paralympian swimmer.
“One of our goals was to cast 50 per cent of the cast identifying as having a disability, since in many films, there is just one token person with disability,” Nina said.
“We wanted to smash the stereotypes and offer a non-judgemental view of love.”
Featuring the life journey of Icelandic free diver Kiki Bosch, ‘Descent’ – up for an Australian Documentary award – delves into the psychological aspects of extreme sport.
“The audience will definitely enjoy the insight,” Kailesh said, adding that his music created for the doco, is ambient and orchestral combined with electronic synth.
The Sydney Film Festival is on offer from today, June 10-21, with tickets and the full program available at full program available at sff.org.au.
