Giant fig crashes down in park but no-one hurt

LUCKILY it had been raining when part of the giant fig tree in Remembrance Park in Lidcombe, came crashing down last Wednesday morning, keeping away visitors and the usual groups of people exercising nearby.

“It could have been disastrous,” said Les Caldarevic, secretary-manager of Lidcombe Bowling Club.
Part of the tree crashed down onto the club’s fence and a green, also taking out its flag pole, about 11am.
“It’s usually a busy part of the park but the rain kept most people away,” he said.
“I was sitting next to the window and heard a massive crack noise and looked up to see the tree come down making a huge whoosh sound.
“I’m just so glad no-one was hurt.”
The club’s green-keeper, Peter Neary, was outside and said he was startled by the loud noise of the tree breaking and the sound of the flag pole snapping in half.
Mr Caldarevic said council workers and an arborist were “quickly on the job clearing the debris and making the area safe”.
