Hula hoop way to boost fun, fitness

THE hula hoop was a fad that seemed destined to fade, like pet rocks, jellybean shoes and fidget spinners, but as it celebrates its 61st birthday, the plastic circle is trending and making a resurgence in the Inner West.

And if you think hula hooping is just for kids, think again.
According to Newtown-based SpinJoy teacher Caitlyn Woods, this simple piece of equipment can boost the fun factor in your fitness routine and give you an excellent workout at the same time.
“When it comes to exercise, finding something you enjoy is key to making physical activity a regular part of your routine,” Caitlyn says.
“When a workout is fun and you look forward to doing it, you’re more likely to stick with it and to be motivated to keep improving.
“You will strengthen your core, improve coordination and discover your rhythm with hoop dance.”
Teaching herself to hula hoop about six years ago through watching YouTube, Caitlyn gave up work this year after demand for her teaching skills grew, not just at her Saturday afternoon studio class at 82 Enmore Road, but at a range of schools through their vacation care programs.
Also offering private lessons, including for parties, Caitlyn says that hula hooping is very popular among children who would prefer a dance sport to a traditional one.
“Hula hooping is quite addictive, great for fitness and wonderful for stress relief and best of all, you can do it anywhere, indoors or outdoors,” she added.
“SpinJoy is where you’ll find a team of passionate hula hoopers who love nothing more than sharing the joy that hula hooping brings.”
