Tommy started out performing in Short+Sweet Play Festival, where he won Best Actor for his role in Simon Godfrey’s The Fox and the Hunter in 2013.
Turning his hand to writing and directing in 2015, Tommy took out Best Director, Best Script, and Best Production for his short play ‘Scratch’; a crime comedy about a gang of cockney hardmen who work for a struggling video store.
Short+Sweet is the largest short-play festival in the world (operating in Sydney, Los Angeles and Dubai) and Tommy has the most awards attached to his work of anybody in the history of the festival.
“Comedy on stage is great because you know immediately if it’s working or not … the only review that really matters is ‘are they laughing?’,” he said.
Last year, Tommy and some actors formed a comedy troupe called Johnny Cobra, and enjoyed a sell-out debut at 107 with their sketch-cabaret ‘Johnny Cobra’s Floating Roadshow’.
The show recycled much of Tommy’s writing over the prior five years, and critics from Theatre Now called it “relatable, ridiculous and an excellent evening of laughter”.
His latest theatrical endeavour ‘Johnny Cobra’s Jurassic Arc’ sees his troupe reunite for another sketch extravaganza, this time at Redfern’s Giant Dwarf Theatre.
‘Jurassic Arc ‘is a hotpot of brand-new sketches, dressed up as an Indiana Jones-style adventure epic.
“It’s really over the top, sketch comedy that has the pomp of theatre (with) costumes, lighting design and lots of props; you’d be a fool not to come along,” he added.
With preview night on October 30, the season will run from November 13-15.
