Meals on Wheels a boost to wellbeing

MEALS on Wheels is more than just a meal, it’s also a welfare check and a nice way to support residents who live alone, says Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake.

After joining Meals on Wheels to see first-hand the service in operation and meet some of the great seniors who live independently in their homes, the Mayor is encouraging others to get involved, as well as volunteers to help deliver the program.
“It’s an important program for our community,” she said.
Meals have been designed to offer a nutritionally balanced diet and help increase the overall health and well-being of customers, also catering for special dietary requirements.
A council spokesperson said without the program, there was a chance that seniors in the community would have to enter residential setting early and the overall well-being of customers would be impacted in relation to illness, isolation and hospitalisations.
The meals provided meet the nutrition guidelines and consist of all the recommended balanced food groups and come packaged as a main meal, juice and dessert.
Seniors must be aged over 65 years, receive Home Care Packages, or be a NDIS customer of any age. Anyone under 65 years can join the program at full cost.
