SES rescues cut off ponies

THREE shetland ponies were rescued in rising floodwaters from a farm in Auld Avenue, Milperra, on Sunday after SES Bankstown received a request for assistance.

SES Bankstown volunteer Elia Habib said they also checked on several thoroughbred horses on the property but they were deemed safe while they ponies were isolated on an ‘island’ that had emerged.
He said that with the help of Canterbury SES, they backed a bowloader boat into the rising flood waters and the ponies were retrieved before being taken to safety on a nearby friend’s property.
“Our biggest problem was trying to get the ponies to follow us,” he said.
“We eventually got them to cooperate by feeding them some straw but the whole operation took a couple of hours.”
