VISUAL artist and architecture student Sarah Anstee is one of 20 artists featured in the 2020 Bankstown Biennale.
Creating eight charcoal drawings of “ordinary” people, her works draw attention to individual efforts to address environmental issues and contribute to the local community.
“The theme of the Biennale is ‘symbiosis’, and I was scouting for people I already knew who did small things like volunteering,” she said.
“I learnt a lot from talking to them and I think it was good for them to talk about what they do, and it will also be good for anyone who wants to engage with the work.”
While trying to organise how to meet people without coming into too much contact during the pandemic was a “somewhat of an issue”, she said it wasn’t an obstacle.
Featuring a diverse range of creative works, the Biennale exhibition launches at the Bankstown Arts Centre with an artists meet and greet this Saturday, October 10, from 12-1.30pm followed by an online artists talk from 3-4.30pm.
On Saturday, October 24, join Costa Georgiadis from the ABC’s Gardening Australia show in conversation with writer Bruce Pascoe, and Biennale artists Alison Clouston, Claire Healy, Lleah Smith, Nicole Monks and Jason Wing.
Numbers are limited with registrations via Eventbrite to join the audience at the Arts Centre or watch online via Facebook live.
